In The Woods
My goal is to get these three trees down safe and not hit the transformer. Picture 4241 is a rotten pine with a small dead cherry tree, in pic 4242 you can see the red arrows at the top, the cherry is resting on the dead pine so I think if I cut the pine the cherry will come with it.

Picture 4243 is a white pine which needs to come down, looks like the natural lean goes in to the woods, pic 4244 is why it has to come down (Pileated Woodpecker).

We have cables, winches, the rhino and the old green truck for use.

I wish I had some good advice, definitely consider rope usage on this one.

The only other thing I can think of is to park your truck within the fall zone, but far from the box. Then you are sure to miss the transformer. Your truck will work like a tree magnet.

I think the bigger pine will go last in to the woods, the cherry will be first, have the cable on it then cut it and drag it out from the backside. Then we will do the dead pine the cherry is resting on second unless the dead pine is real weak, will check that in the morning.

Once these are down then cleaned up it will be another stacking area which should hold 4-5 cord if not more. Have close to 2 cord in cherry thats down just north of this waiting for smokin and the 880.

Is there anything you can put around or near the transformer just in case?

One old pallet, it might be time to invest in a second cable.

I just make the cuts in the tree like normal but make the back cut less than usual and then I pull in down with a vehicle in the direction I want it to go, if the tree is rotten you may not have to make any cuts to speak of.

Yes. These work nice. With your money ZAP, I would go with the second one. :cheese:

I don't like cutting rotten trees ya never know what will happen. But the best bet is to protect your self then the box. Since you don't have anything else to crib around it with pile firewood around it and lay some heavy planks over it.

I use a long nylon rope, Stretch it pretty tight. get a good notch & a good hinge, the nylon acts like a rubber band & pulls steady tension for quit a few feet to keep the momentum pulling the way you want it to fall.
I've topped some, climb high & tie the nylon rope. Come down a ways & cut part way thru (medium trees I use a bow saw), the pull/break the top out with the ATV.
You'll be fine. Tie off & tension it. Good notch & hinge. You've done it several times, trust your method.
Imagine it's your P/U truck parked there, you;ll miss it for sure then!
Got insurance ???? LOL
Good luck but remember "skill & cunning" "overcomes luck & ignorance" every time ;)

WE have faith in our zap. You'll get it down okay.

Looks like I changed my mind already, the bigger pine will come down first, I'll get a better picture in the morning from inside the woods. Just happens to be a nice lane in that area for the tree to fall towards the woods, if I can get the rhino in a safe area (not in line with the fall) with the winch and cable then the only other thing to worry about is the base. :grrr:

Is this transformer yours or the power company's responsibility? Just wondering if you called them about your concern. Who'd replace it if these trees fell on their own? They might be willing to take care of it vs. them making you replace it if something goes wrong when you take matters into your own hands.

Not sure who owns it but can get that info. If the tree is on our property (it is) we have to take care of it, they won't do chit for ya unless you pay them.

I'd suggest sharing your concern w/ them first. Depending on their response, give them a few "what if" scenarios to help clarify your responsibility.

If a bad tree in my yard takes down the main line in front of my house (feeds everyone here) during a storm it's their responsibility for not trimming it prior as they had the right to do so if they wanted. If I try and be proactive and do damage myself, I just took responsibility. May not be the same in your area, but it doesn't hurt to check.

I'm not sure about that ZAP. If you talk to them they may take them all down if you tell them they pose a hazard to their equipment. Worth a shot.

I was serious by the way. From the pics the White Pine looks to have an advantageous lean where you could notch it and fell it away from the box. The leaner and the leanee really don't look that big where, as Jack Straw mentioned, you could protect the box with a shield of some sort. Or you could rope from the clearing to the east. The Beer is optional.

Its funny you mention the beer, i'd have a case there just in case things went bad, its a great scapegoat!

Here is the white pine from inside the woods, we have another dead pine that needs to come down that would be in it's path, you can see the dead branch in the picture.

Looks like I will use the cable with the winch and treesavers just to make sure it won't get hung up.

That is the approach that I would take, Zap.

I just need to make sure the trail heading east for the rhino is cleared, might be able to use the trail I cleared earlier this year.

Pileated Woodpecker ruined the base of this pine so we took it down today. Put the cable around the pine (up about 10- 12 feet) then inside the woods we had a tree saver (tow strap) around a cherry tree, ran the cable through a dshackle hooked to the tree saver then hooked the cable to the end of the winch on the back of the rhino.

Once I made the notch on the font side I had my wife who was in the rhino (at a safe distance) put just a little tension on the cable, started the back cut...when it started to go the wife helped it out a bit, went better then I thought.

Limbed up the pine then took it along with some other junk wood (two trips) to the wood dump, bucked up the pine for shoulder season wood for next heating season. I would have had a picture of the setup but the card was full plus it would not let me delete pictures from the card, so after we felled it I went inside so I could grab a another card.

After I was finished I took my neighbor (previous owner of the land) for a ride up top. It was the first time he had been up there in about 30 years so I listen to the memories he had about sugaring with his dad along with many other things. We had a great trip which lasted about two hours.

You've done this before :)
I like the hinge to be about 2" thick, but trees with damaged interiors are sometimes more difficult to control when you have decayed, rotten or brittle spots that you can't see.
Good job! (Well maybe 1 foot to the left would have been perfect  )

The base was better than I thought. Most of the overhead branches on the pine were hanging over the backside, had the wedges ready, even with very little tension from the rhino via the cable it started to fall in to the woods right off the bat, then when my wife put more tension on, it came down to the right.

Looks like the wife will be ok with burning pine for our shoulder season wood next year, all she said was make sure it's seasoned good.
