I have a sauna stove with 6 inch pipe. I bought a cast iron damper for it. I have not tried to put it in yet. Still trying to figure where it should go on the pipe and how to do it. The sauna stove has an adjustable air box and is air tight. If I don't install the damper, what sort of problems will I have?

Thanks!

It can go a comfortable distance above the stove (too close and it will be too hot).

Why do you want to install one? Does the manufacturer recommend it?

Yes they do. But what is the dampers purpose?

If I want to shut the stove off, can't I just close the airbox in the stove to cut the air out?

It basically slows the draft and is an extra help in controlling the fire.

Without knowing the specifics on the stove you are using, if they recommend using one my guess is that the stove will not shut down enough for all installations by its own air control and the pipe damper is to help you make sure things stay down to a reasonable level.
