So the new to me Stihl 028 AV Super needs a new sprocket as far as I can tell. When the chain is tightened to where it should be the bottom guide teeth seem to catch on the sprocket where they seat into it.When loose it will pull through fine.So my question is how hard is it to change a sprocket on one of these.I'm what you would call handy (I guess) I have rebuilt a carb on a walkbehind snowblower and work on a stock car so I'm hoping I can do this but before I start pulling things apart and then end up taking an even more broken saw into the dealer to fix I figured I'd ask around here.

Never had my hands on one, but should just pull the clip.

I have the same saw and i changed mine last month. This was my first time and it was pretty simple to do with no special tools needed besides a torx bit. I took pictures as i took it apart so i could take to dealer to match up with new one and didnt want to forget how it went back together. Mine was shot and kept throwing the chain off.

I got the old sprocket off no problem. Now to get the new one on Monday and I should be back in buisiness.Big thanks to Danno77 for the manual and guide.

I'm just excited to hear your experience of moving from a 35cc Poulan to a 47cc Stihl (even if it is older)...this thing is gonna blow your socks off. Or maybe you've run different saws, so you won't be surprised?

The Poulan is really the only saw I have run any amount so I can only imagine what the difference will be.But hey, the Poulan was a x-mas gift and didn't cost me a cent and the Stihl was free just had to put on a new bar, chain, and sprocket.I can't lose either way. :)

Well I got the sprocket changed without problem and the fine tuning for the idle and high/low speed adjustments.Saw purrs like a kitten and will get to try it out tomorrow when I go and block up the rest of the wood for the old fellow that gave it to me.Once again big thanks to Danno77 for the manual. :)

John, did you by chance pull the clutch drum & lube the needle bearing while you were in there? A C

I take it that's different then the bearing that goes inside the sprocket? If so no :-S .Guessing it would be a good idea to do it.Thanks for the advice. :)

Yea, quick easy maint. every now & then. If your saw is a spur sprocket then you found the bearing, if it's a rim sprocket the bearing sits inside the drum. Just use a little hi temp grease. Enjoy that saw too. A C
