Not good!! Looks like I'm buying wood for half of the season.

There is something to be said for being a year+ in advance. My wife and I were going good at getting ahead for this winter and the bad happened.
During one of our trips cutting wood, I somehow managed to tear a bicep. Two weeks and I get repaired. I'm out 8 weeks and then rehab after that.
That sucks. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone of you.

Keep cutting and stay warm.

Few of us here have had some event shut down a wood cutting season
I know for Dennis (BWS), N60, & myself, being ahead was a blessing.
Were able to make it up a year later & be on track & ahead again.
Since you'll be buying, can you stack "one armed" ?
Take your time & let it heal correctly, don't want to be 2 years behind.
Good luck.

I am very sorry to hear that wvwoodchuck. I hope you heal well, and soon. In the meantime, enjoy some nice fires, every once and a while maybe a beer or five, and take it easy so that you heal as fast as possible. It is always tempting to get back at anything when you are injured. But let it heal man, let it heal. Then when you do go back, do it gradually, a little at a time. You will be very glad you did. And very sorry if you don't. This will also give you some extra time to read more and more on hearth.com. Scour this site. There is a ton on hear. Your wife might get a little tired of you being on the computer so much though. I have to try to limit it when I see her getting tired of it. :cheese: A speedy recovery to you man.

I'm truly sad to hear that, it's time like this when it just seems like life sucks...

I am about 3-4 years ahead for that very reason... Just in case something happens...

That is awful. Tore a pectoral a few years ago, it was miserable. Good luck on the recovery.

Best wishes on your recovery. Agree with the above poster about taking time to let it heal properly. Good luck!

I feel your pain....I've been down twice this year with a Torn Miniscus....2 surgeries, and a total of 12 weeks missed....still counting, not back to work yet.....long story

Yep something to be said for being ahead. I was three years ahead when I herniated the disk between the S1-L5, I had a microdiscectomy back in July. I'm pretty much healed up from it but won't be cutting for a while still, I was just able to stack a cord of wood that I had cut/split in January. I have a couple cord that needs to be split right now, I'm hoping to get some splitter time soon.

Wow. Thanks everyone. I'm sure I'll spend a lot of time on here. Look out Zap, I'm going to be after your post count. :) I've got a laptop, so I can be on here while watching TV. :)
I hope sometime, I'll be able to stack with the good arm.

Thats one of the reason I want to be 3 years ahead, when we get older our bodies break down easier, good luck recovering, buying wood isnt so bad, its still cheaper than oil/gas.

wvwoodchuck, sorry to hear about the tear, when I was talking with Sav that was one of the things he said about being ahead, if you ever get hurt and your down for a while you'll be ok until your healed.

Get after that post count, just make sure you have pictures of something. ;-)

My uncle's goal is to be 15 years ahead so as his body slows down his wood cutting can also slow down and not fall behind. He is doing pretty good. From my estimates he is about 7-8 years ahead right now. I'm giving him another 5-10 years before his body starts to slow down and his burning will start to outpace his cutting. Smart man if you ask me.

Not good wvwoodchuck. Sadly, this is just one more tale that supports the theory of being way ahead with your wood. If you were 3 years ahead, this temporary situation would not be so bad. We still hope you get through this quickly.

I also recall last year when a neighbor had no wood to start the heating season. Then after I set him up with wood, he suffered an injury on top of it all. However, he had some ash trees in his yard that had to come down. Those are in his wood pile for this year. We're hoping he can get back to cutting soon and keeps from any more injuries.

Another supporter of the "Three Years Ahead" rule by way of "been there-done that" experience. I was tired or scrambling/scrounging for dry wood to get me through the winter. Having learned my lesson, last winter was the time I was going to bust my butt and get 'er done. Mid October (2010), on the very first day after I got home from my last road trip of the year I broke my ankle. Set me back several weeks. I much prefer doing my wood work in the winter. I still managed to do a little, bucking and splitting a storm downed pin oak and a recently dead standing water oak. My bride was not pleased that I was out working in the woods while I was still gimpy and it probably prolonged the healing process. Come to think of it... that ankle still hurts!

I continued to work through the summer building up my supply of rounds. Once I got my splitter I put it to work. Now I have really close to three years and a whole bunch of dead trees I can work on this winter. I really don't want to ever have to work on wood in the summer again!

I'll admit that my burning needs do not require nearly the quantity of wood most of you guys go through each year, but it's the same principle, eh?

(We don't really say "eh" in Texas.)

Get well soon . . .

Sorry to hear about the injury guy. Get fixed up and well soon. Yeah, always be ahead. Eric Johnson one of the early mods here got that through my head "in case something happens". It did three weeks ago when I slipped sideways on a muddy incline going down hard on the end of my left shoulder on a tree root and from what it feels like pretty much destroying the sucker. The shoulder, not the root.

Glad Eric pounded that year ahead through my head.

Get the message gang. Get the message. It ain't just for getting it dry.

You too heal fast BB. A great way of getting the message across too.

I am very sorry to hear that wvwoodchuck. My accident in June has left my prospects of much wood cutting this winter in jeopardy. I am far enough ahead that I will be OK this winter and next, but I will have to put a lot away next winter. Hope you heal fast man.

Hope you both heal fast.

I learned this lesson last year, when I thought I had enough wood, and didn't (the Arctic temps we had coupled with a 2nd stove were brutal on the wood pile).

I've got next year sitting here, and working on 13-14.

Take care and heal fast!!!

Nothing like being laid up for a while to put your wood store into perspective.

3 years minimum, one year for a safety net in case of mishap, and an extra year just because.......

Well, just because you wanted a bigger wood pile to take pictures of ;-)

Geez, you old men are dropping like flies :cheese:

Hope you guys heal up fast, being laid up is no fun, Ive been there myself.

This place is great. I didn't get this many get wells' from the bio family. Good thing my woodcutting family is there!! Thanks everyone.
Vincent- I'm near Lewisburg, WV. Proud to be a hillbilly!! I'm hoping that after the first week or two, I'll be able to load the stove with the good arm.
Luckily, so far this year it's still been pretty warm. My wife had the shoes pulled from the draft horse since I'm out for the next couple months.
Zap- I'll have to take pictures of something to post. Maybe a picture of my wife loading the stove. :) She's a good woman. She puts up with me.

In case I don't make it back on here before Thursday.....HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Good luck with your recovery. I had shoulder problems off and on for about 10 years and one day while simply reaching up to shift my work van into drive I felt/heard a pop in my arm. Some of the worst pain I'd ever felt, still not sure how I kept my foot on the brake and got it back into park. Doc told me my bicep tendon had ruptured. Surgery and rehab completed 2 years ago and it's better now than it had been for a decade.
Hope your's turns out at least as good.
