What do you guys think about using 'slab' wood in a stove? This stuff is pretty cheap here and is all hardwood. I have a lot of my own wood but want to supplement it, when I can afford it, with some purchased stuff. I have a cord of good, split hardwood coming from a neighbor for $160 but I could get slab wood for about $70. What has been your experience with it?

I have used it. I had to process some, because the oak slabs were rather large.
Works like a champ, works best when mixed with rounds or large splits in the stove.

I also use slab wood from the local saw mill.The wood that I can get is only one inch thick and runs between 4 inch to 12 inch wide and about 8 inch to 3 foot long.
Most of the wood is oak but sime of it is also walnut and cherry and any thing else that might be cut.
It burns real good but the best part is it is only 2.00 per all you can get on a pickup truck.............TC

I used to be able to buy 3/4 cord bundles of slab wood for twenty- five dollars delivered in eight bundle loads, so there were years where that was all I burned. My only complaint with slab wood is cutting it up , Ive found that putting it in a rack works best.The mill I got it from threw in everything ,edgings as well as some slabs that needed to split. I guess I usually figured I burned an extra cord per season compared to regular firewood. The plus side of slab wood is it dries fairly fast and you have ready made kindling and the price. I still try to buy a bundle or two each summer for early and later season fires. Most mills up here in Mn. chip it now so its harder to find and the price keeps escalating.
