I imagine there are pluses and minuses to either close or far. However, there would be less tromping through snow and such if it were closer. :)

Ya put the wood on the deck or where ever you exit the house to get the wood. However if you lived further south or had termites than you would want it to have it further away from the house.

In the barn, next to the boiler room.

About 30-40' from the house

Rule of thumb is at least 20 feet.

Keeping it off the ground will save lots of insect troubles.

For years I have stacked the wood away from the house because of termite concerns and frozen my butt off bringing in the wood. This year, because I got a late start, I stacked four cords of it right outside the back door of the basement where my office is located.

It ain't ever going anywhere else from here on. Taking two steps out the door and grabbing some wood is a luxury I will not ever deny myself again. Always at hand for the office stove and when I needed to go upstairs I just took a few splits with me each time.

*always* the first path to dig out after fresh snow is the one to the wood racks! After I warm up I tackle the driveway ;-)

I keep the main pile 120' from the house. About every 1.5 weeks I bring up 1/4 of a cord to the back door (with the truck). By doing that I keep the mess and bugs away. ;-)

Termites aren't an issue here. In the fall, I stack as much as possible in the breezeway between my house and garage. This way I don't have to go out in the snow (we average 120+ inches per year here).

My wood is about 40-50' from the house and gets stacked about 15' from the garage, where I process it. Bugs are a factor (especially termites) but I would also be nervous about having a couple cords right near the house (like under a deck). The chance may be slim but that much dry fuel would make a hell of a blaze if it ever caught fire. One of my neighbors keeps his whole supply under his deck right outside his kitchen door. Oh...his riding mower, push mower, weed wacker, gas cans, garbage cans, etc... are also stuffed under there as well.
Whatever you're comfortable with I guess.......

My woodpile is 100 ft from the house (just past the lawn, in the woods). I bring the entire thing to my covered porch in November before the snow comes.
