So have been trying to get one of these eco log splitters. Its just a simple hand lever that has a little splitter point that presses into the log. It makes splitting these eco logs pretty easy with out sending chuncks of them everywhere. Only thing is I cant seem to find any online. Guess I am just not looking in the right place.

Anyone get one online and if so where and any particular likes or dislikes. Thanks.

Search eBay for "manual log splitter". Myself I would just use a brick chisel.

They are extremely slow.

lol

Thanks for the ideas but its not quit what I am looking for. The one I am looking for looks like a little tray that holds the eco logs, basically you slide it in and there is a handle that brings a wedge down on the eco log to split or break it up into smaller hockey puck size pieces. Ive only scene them at one place guess I can go back there and find out what they are called and who makes them. For some reason I just cant find them online. I think they are called something that I am not quiet putting into google search properly.

It sounds like you're trying to make fire starters from a pressed wood log (Presto-log). I did a quick google for "presto log cutter" and found an old (1966) newspaper ad for one, but nothing current. A radial arm saw or miter saw might work for you.

I cut up my Duraflame starter logs with one of those cheapo "ever-sharp" knives that I got at an outlet store for like $5. The logs are so pliable that it goes right through them wrapper and all. Dunno if it would work on the Eco-logs but worth looking.

Thanks guys. I called the place where I got my logs from and they said the splitter is supplied from the same place they get the logs. Its from North Idaho Energy Logs. They dont have it listed on the website. Guess Ill just wait till they have some in stock again.

Is it just me, or . . .

You are seriously freakin' kidding, right??

Ummm no not really. Sure it isnt some 6 ton splitter or whatever for regular wood but for splitting these eco logs to make smaller portions to start the fire easier when you dont have a bunch of kindling laying around it does make the job much easier. Yes I can use a ax but it sends chunks of the stuff everywhere.

Not to mention when I get sent out on deployment my wife can have something that is very simple to operate and can help her get use to wood burning. Trying to make sure things are as simple as possible for this winter when I have to leave.

Anyways thought this would be the place to help, atleast I gave ya a good laugh right :(

These work great for starting fires.

The boxes I at WallMart were $10 and have 48 in each.

Yes, be careful with that link to Amazon. The box they are selling contains only 8 of them, not 48 as at WalMart (per NATE379).

Quint, I have been playing around with those eco bricks. If you get some super cedars like someone suggested, break them in quarters, I think your wife can get the fire going with no problem, even if the ecos are not split smaller. (I favor the supercedars...very easy peasy).
I have found those eco bricks start up very quickly, more so than other composite bricks like the envi ones.
I have just been using one or two mixed in with some dry wood, I was curious to see how they burned.
It's nice that you are thinking of ways to make it easier for her while you are away....I am sure she is very appreciative :)

One should be able to make something from an old machete and some scraps of wood. Screw two boards on edge to a base, and make a circular cutout for the presto-log. Drill a small hole through the boards and through the tip of the machete for a pivot bolt and you have yourself a guillotine.

Hi
Go to a pawn shop and buy the cheapest miter saw you can find.Or buy a good one if you do any wood work.
Allways a bounis whemn you can find two uses or more for a tool.
Thomas

Was thinking to take a machete (a cheap one) and a dead blow like 3lb hammer and smack the back of the machete and the top and back on each side of the cut.
