In The Woods
After the freezing rain plus the snow last night I decided to check the trails, I think there is a total of three Hemlock down. I cleared the one that opened up the trail on the low part of our property but the bowl and up top is off limits until this is cleared.

Picture 4284 is where it pulled out of the side of the hill, looks like a nice size Hemlock for milling.

The snow should be gone in a couple of days which should allow for better footing, I really need to take a better look at this one. I would like the old green truck with a cable back in there and maybe give it a shot at pulling it down.

We will look this over good before we do anything.

Just a couple more for you zap.

Last night it was raining when we went to bed and the forecast said the temperature would stay up. This morning there was ice on our porch...

How much snow did you get?South of you in Schenectady county we didn't get any snow just a little sleet last night.

In the driveway we had about three inches, should be gone real quick.

After looking at picture 4282, I think the truck will be heading north (towards the gate) with the cable down near the trunk, one cut, then with the truck we should be able to pull it out of the tree.

Seems like Hemlock are the first down for windfalls around here. In the Spring right after the snow melts I find Hemlock down before than anything else. I'll be burning some tonight.

Hemlock have shallow roots and are notorious for falling. And they seem to grow like weeds. When I cut with a permit hemlock seems to be the most plentiful. It's not my favorite to burn, but I burn a lot of it because it's so available.

yeah looks like a warm up for ya zap is coming this weekend. them some more rain again next week. crazy. im ready for some nice snow. plus i have a new snowblower to try out.

Nice pics as usual Zap! Amazingly it's still pretty mild here, today will be in the 50's then 60's the next 2 days.. November should be a record breaker with all the warm temps we've had here.. This could become a setup for a big storm if the jetstream shifts at some point.. Time will tell.

No snow for you this winter, you'll have to work all winter cutting wood. :)

Last year I cut until the beginning of February, whats a couple of more months. ;-) Looks like the mid west might be in for a tough winter.

zap, I would not count on two winters in a row like last winter. Methinks you are liable to push more snow than wood this winter.

I'm happy with what we have stacked so when we get it that will be fine. The bad thing about the warm weather is the great lakes take longer to freeze, should make for some big snow.

Zap - do you ever burn hemlock? Just took down two decent sized hemlock for a neighbor today, and was thinking about taking a bunch of rounds to make kindling. Cheers!

Yes - saw the milling photos - awesome! I think I'll make a bunch of 1" square kindling sticks out of 4 or 5 rounds. Cheers!

With all the rain in the last two days plus more coming with some winds what are the odds the Hemlock thats hung up on the maple uproots the maple then comes down.

Wednesday: A chance of showers, mainly after 3pm. Cloudy, with a temperature falling to around 40 by 5pm. Southwest wind between 10 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
