... to make sure that it still runs without problems.
It has not been used for more than a year and I wanted to make sure that it would work if for some reason the heat pump doesnt deliver (ie below -20 outside).

I had the stove plugged into an APC back up that was disconnected as well, and found out that the battery is dead, the APC flashes the led "Battery needs replacing". Thats a bummer.

Ran the stove for about an hour, didnt notice any problems shut it off and tomorrow will do a cleaning and hopefully it will stay shut till next year for another test run.

Stay warm.

A rare breed.. A pellet stove owner, who does not want to burn pellets?

Congratulations for overcoming the "sickness" we all have here.

I take it the pellet stove is your secondary heat source?

I'm starting to feel the same way. With the price of natural gas as low as it is it doesn't make a lot of sense to burn pellets.

On the other hand there is something about a pellet stove that won't let me leave it alone!

Yes the pellet stove is my secondary heat source.
The main one is a ductelless mini split heat pump.
And I agree that there is something to a pellet stove.

Wow. I bought a pellet stove specifically because I have heat pumps and my electric bills are brutal in the winter. The last straw is the electric company is eliminating the all-electric home discount that I currently get, so It'll even get worse.

Natural gas would be great, if I could get it. It's on my street but a mile south of my house. I don't know if that will ever change.

You must have a very ineficient heat pump firestarter. I dont know how much your hydro costs are but a Heat pump should not increase more than 20-30% your electrical bill in the winter.
Wich imo should still be alot cheaper than pellets.

How big of a place are you heating with a ductless mini-split system as the primary source of heat?

I'm heating a 2800+ square feet (4BR, 2.5 BA) split-level house with two heat pumps that were installed 6 years ago.

My house is a bungalow approx 1300sq with unfinished and unheated basement.
6 years is probably a long time in Heat Pump technology but I see what you mean, I really wish the heat pump system worked for you.
