Finally able to get more wood today. Half a trailer of oak and the rest was plum and aspen. Boy oak sure is heavy. Loving the ma[del][/del]kita rebadged Dolmar saw! Makes quick work of the hard woods

Nice load of firewood elijah, what type of weather are you getting?

zap

Makita bought out dolmar and I almost bought one the other day but went with a used 029 stihl like my other 029 which I have had for 23 years (now I have a spare in case something happens to my 025). The used one I got seemed to have less power/compression until I got a tank of gas through it. Oak can be rough on a blade but now I have 3 stihls to handle the job. Now If I could clone myself I could get the "heavy" loaded easier. Oak sure burns nice though and that fiskars will do a job on it too!

Nice work Elijah. I like that trailer. I am keeping my eyes open for a used one to pull behind my father's tractor. How much wood do you go through in a year?

The weather has been mild it seems this year, zap. Nights have been mid twenty's to low thirty's and days have been low forty's to low fifty's. Can't wait for the colder weather to try out some hardwoods I've accumulated, red oak, black locust, mulberry, but the green ash won't be ready until next year. Right now we're burning cottonwood, silver maple, box elder and a little bit of willow.

The 029 is a great saw. I'd have gone with a Stihl but the price of the rebadged Dolmar used from Home Depot was UNBEATABLE. They also sold me 10 chains with very little use, they change the chain out each time it's rented out, for 10 bucks!

This trailer has been an absolute godsend. I was keeping my eye open for a used one as well and I looked for a few months. A lot of them seemed pretty beat up. Finally found this and jumped right away on it. 3500 lb axle, 5x10 and was used for two years for a landscape business so it had light use and it showed. I had no idea how much I'd use it until we got it. I originally picked it up for firewood. Then the wife wanted new furniture, so I saved by not having it delivered, picked up loads of rocks, gravel, garden soil, etc. I've brought home probably 15-16 cords of wood with it as well. It's been great.

Last year we burned 4 cords and it was all softwood; cottonwood, pine, chinese/siberian elm and willow.

Good load. Nice trailer too.
I bet it was about all the trailer wanted. Heavy load?
Got it all split & stacked by now I'm guessing :)

Oh yeah, it's all stacked.......... in the trailer! Yeah, it was heavy alright. I was surprised that the oak spit easily with the Fiskars. I'd of thought that wood that hard would have been miserable to split by hand. I swung at a couple yesterday just messing around and the 8 inch rounds split after 2 or 3 whacks. Great success!

Nice to see someone balancing a trailer load and not overloading it! That is a nice trailer!

Are you sure that is oak? Some of it looks like Black Locust.

I'm 99% sure it is oak, but I guess I could be wrong. When I get home I'll snap some close up pics so you guys can tell me so I can be sure. I do have some Black Locust at home and it is definitely different from this wood. The plum is on the bottom in the trailer, so you can't see it in the pic.

WOW, & I was just joking.
You are ambitious & busy.
Good job!
I too thought it might be locust, but it's been many years since I cut or handled any, (rougher bark than oak) :zip:

I was joking as well, saying that it's stacked still in the trailer, same way that I brought it home. Smells like oak for sure. I'll get a pic up later,

Now we are going to have to see pictures for verification :)
I enjoyed splitting by hand. I get more even & accurate splits now with the speeco & get more wood split. Also I know my back is happier.
I take the maul to the woods & sometimes have to split some of the larger heavy rounds, but green birch seems to split pretty easy if there are no knots or twisted grain.
Sometimes I can just tap it with the maul & it sounds like a ripe watermelon, & cracks. Makes me feel "Macho" to bust some of the big ones with little effort :)
I'm still OK just swinging 1/2 swings a few times on the easy stuff.

Nice load of wood there.....I imagine having the trailer makes it a lot easier....no lifting to tailgate hieght, just roll them on and lift high enough to stack

Pics to determine species of wood.

In the split pic, the medullary rays are visible so it's some type of Oak. Not sure which type...possibly Bur Oak.

Can you post a pic of the leaves?

I don't have any pics of leaves or any leaves. This was some wood that a guy had in his yard for a while and he wanted it gone. It sure smells like oak and the grain sure looks like the oak I've seen on floors and tables etc.

Ive never seem Bur Oak, does it have thick bark like that? It looks like it would be a bit better than red oak.
