I found my Englander 30 on Craigslist. It was new, still on the shipping pallet, wrapped in plastic, for $550.

The guy thought he would need two to heat his house (an old remodeled church), but discovered one was enough.

The deals are out there. Keep an eye out for them and be ready to move when you find one.

Englander from AMFM Energy or www.overstockstoves.com

Spending the money "Now", will save you that much or more in electric bills if you have to use little space heaters. I had a buddy use them and his bill was ridiculous!

Go back 2 threads (even 3 threads) at the bottom of the page. Lots of talk about $600 Englanders.

That said, the US Stove 200 isnt a bad unit. Uncle has one and it does a good job of heating hos house (1200 sq, only heating about 900 with closed off rooms). Keep it full of wood (pretty often).and keep the blower on and you wont be disappointed. Much better than burning a stove designed to have Cats and running without.

Your money, do what you do with it. IMO a newer stove would give more bang for the buck, than buying Cats for your current heater.

That is how I see it. Get a new wood stove we will be better off then trying to fix this one. Now How to come up with the money. Sale this stove for scrap, Sale off some of my tools. Sale a kidney LOl, just kidding.
Thank you all for you help.

Your right in better to look for another boat than to try and patch holes in an old one. In particular with the trip your going on.

Struggle if you must for a bit and keep those eyes peeled for that deal. It will happen. Youll have something that will last, hopefully last as long as your current stove is old, and be toasty warm.

We will expect you to come back and share pictures and tell us the scrouge of wood you got.

God luck.

I wonder if finding a working, old stove and using it this winter is the way to go. An older stove won't be EPA rated and therefore will be less efficient than a new stove, but it might be more tolerant of bad wood and a flue of the wrong size. I like my new stove, but that doesn't mean an old one won't work too.

Should be able to get a new Englander NC-13 for about $500 or a used one for less if you search the net. Ill nab one myself if i get a deal.

I not sure I understand what you are say about the flue size. My stove is flue is 8" stove pipe" is 8" and Chimney is 8" or are you saying that until I get the right size flue, pipe, and chimney for the new stove it would be better to get an older stove. I have thought of getting and older stove and I know how to work it just keep feeding every hour or two. Lol

Dont waste your money on an EPA exempt stove, which is a fancy term for a smoke dragon, NON EPA stove ,yes they still sell those. I gave mine away ,it was called the King stove from TSC Supply. The same store has EPA approved stoves as well.

Just picked up a NC13 at Home Depot for $640. Not listed on thier website but they had 2 in stock.

If or when I buy a new stove it will be EPA approved. You know it would not shock me if they made all the non- EPA illegal.

EPA stoves are great and burn clean. But, the best stove you can get is the one you can afford.

Here's a vigilant for $500. A Vigilant will put out a ton of heat and accepts an 8" pipe/line:

Is it the best stove you can get? No. Can you afford it and will it meet your needs? Yes.

And here's a Dutchwest Extra Large for $475 that runs an 8" pipe and is a catalytic stove. It is not being used as a cat stove for some reason, and additional information is needed to figure out why it is not being used in such a way, but it does fit your requirements.

This are both beautiful stoves. If I had the money I would buy one of these stove. I am scared with my track record of buying used stuff that all ways needs to be fix. The Dutchwest needs a cat and that puts me in the same boat I am In. How can you tall if any thing is warped and how much to fix up? I know nothing about these stove so can you give me the heads up on what to look for in a good used stove and if it needs to be fix how much ball price.

No, the difference is that the Dutchwest needs ONE cat. Not four. All cat stoves will need a new cat within three to five years. You have a $600 budget.

Most likely the Dutchwest will need these two parts:
http://www.blackswanhome.com/product/refractory-package-consolidated-dutchwest
http://www.blackswanhome.com/product/catalytic-combustor-consolidated-dutchwest

Look for warped doors, discolored castings (signs of continued overfire), and cracks.

The Vigilant is a pretty straight forward stove. Make sure the doors are not warped, the fireback, or any other castings, are not cracked, and there are no gaps where the castings meet. Make sure the air controls are functional.

These two stoves represent two solutions to your needs. There are others out there. For $600 and an 8" exhaust requirement, it will be tough but I have shown that there are options out there.

Hi BrowningBAR, I really appreciate your help. Has for A door being warped how dose that look?

Depends upon how warped it is. Use the dollar bill test on several parts of the door. Even if it needs gaskets you will still feel a difference. On double doors like the Vig you will see a slight bowing.

Hi guys, Will the Englander 13-NCH say it will heat 1,800 sq feet. I know that is under the perfect conditions.
I am just wanting to see if it will heat my home that is all. My home is 1,500 sq feet old Carolina farm house with the floor hight off the ground ranging from sitting on the ground to 2' off the ground. Not all the floors are insulated due to the fact you can't get underneath their and I have 2 rooms that the walls are not insulated. The attic has R-11 and need more insulation to bring it up to code. My home can get really drafty when the wind get up. I have 8" chimney system that is 14' tall that I needs to add more hight to get it over 15'. I know I will have to use 6" black stove pipe to 8" SS class A Chimney. So do you think the Englander 13 will heat my home even when the temp get to be 0°F or blow outside which is not often but it does happen.

Someone posted above that link on the US Stove , so I went and looked at them, nice price. I noticed it has 4 burn tubes as some only have 3.

But they have a deal going if anyone sends them a pic of your US Stove you get a free Ash Vac.

To heat the place at 0 degrees it will be pushing the stove hard. That is, it's going to require frequent refills. Fortunately those temps are pretty rare in Clover, SC. For your normal winter temps the stove should do fine heating the place.

How soon do you need a stove? If you can wait I'd go for an Englander 30. As spring approaches Home Depot will put them on sale. I bought mine in March for $600, and I found a 10% coupon so it came to $540. Of course, the double wall chimney/stove pipe, custom hearth, and accessories cost me another $2500. And I did all the work myself.

If you need a stove now I would go with the US Stove from tractor supply. It seems to be a descent unit.

And FYI, the Englander 30 is a perfect fit for my 1500sq.ft two story home. Its 112 years old and not well insulated. Without cranking the stove hard I can get the downstairs toasty and the upstairs to 70 degrees.

You want more stove than you need, not just enough.

I was hoping for it now. but it will be a while before I can do anything.

The smaller stove might work out better in the shoulder seasons VS trying to maintain a clean burn with a big stove while only requiring a small amount of heat.
Im waiting for a deal on an englander 13 for a small apmt, The 30 would stick out into the room too far and the Sq Ft is Low. I already have a 30 available but its just too deep for that application. In any case adding more or better insulation has the same effect as increasing the stove size or burning larger quantities of wood.
