On the west coast Washington specifically we don't apparently have as much trouble with "coaling" or the build up of unburned coals. My assumption is we have more soft wood to burn. The ash dragon looks cool in concept but I don't have much trouble with build up. Most of the wood makes more ash than coals. The shovel is something I could use as we get the little "moon rocks" and I like to get them out. By the way, anyone know where the rocks come from?

I ordered the sifter. Don't need the trap. I like to move the coals to the side and use my Loveless vac.

I have a similar product called the Ash Trap. Works well for me...
ISTR the original Ash Trap that was made in Canada went out of business. That said, the Ash Trapper is a close knockoff. They both have a well closing lid that slides back out of the way.

The Ash Dragon has a hinged lid that when open, sticks out past the front edge of the scoop.

Yes, I noticed the difference and I do like the sliding lid. Works like a charm!

I also liked how the carry handle was setup. Can the lid slide off so as not to be in the way or will it only slide back so far? I wanted to buy one but from the pics and video, it didn't look like it would fit inside my firebox. I emailed the maker but never got a reply. Kinda moot however since they are no longer produced.

I might have to make my own but in the meantime got pretty good at removing hot ashes without raising too much dust.

"Can the lid slide off so as not to be in the way or will it only slide back so far?"

No. The two bolts that attach the handle to the lid keep it from sliding completely off. If you reversed the bolts so the bolt heads were on the underside it might slide off, but the lid is a pretty tight fit to the groove it slides on. Might have to replace the bolts with rivits for additional clearance. It is a shame the company went out of business. This really is a great product.

Seems to be a bit cumbersome to use in a stove. I have been thinking about making my own ash/coal separator though.

Ja, that was my first thought. In my case I have built-in andirons that would get in the way. Here's a pic of the original Ash Trap along with a write-up. ISTR the original came in two sizes.

The Ash Trapper is very similar but I don't know how the sizes compare.

Yeah, I have the big one that's no longer made.
I really like it.
It works fine with my little insert.
I can scoop a bunch of ash in there, and bring the whole thing out to rest on concrete until the next time to empty the ashes from the stove, and then I dump the ashtrap-everything is very cold by then.
In fact, it cools off really quick covered like that.
