I have a masonry chimney and am getting an insert (avalon perfect fit). Liner is costing me about 500 bucks. What questions should I be asking to make sure I am not getting ripped off. Is there a minimum type of liner for this application that someone would install and charge a maximum price? I am buying from an established business that seems to have a great rep but I only trust myself so I gotta ask. Is the liner that would line a pre existing masonry chimney all the same? I am assuming that the new liner negates the chimney as the wood insert negates the fireplace. During the estimate the owner basically explained it like this. There is a new fireproof box being installed in an already fireproof box. Will the new liner follow the same principle? Thanks

I would say that liner alone should cost around $500. If that's what your saying, then you are solid. If you are getting quoted $500 for liner and install, then I would be worried about what your getting. I would imagine a good price on a installed liner on a fairly simple application should cost $800-$1000.

Here's one more: https://www.hearth.com/econtent/index.php/forums/viewthread/83767/

I asked the same question a few months ago. If someone had given me a $500 estimate to do my liner I'd have told them not to come down off the roof and to get to it.

Check on Rockford Chimney http://www.chimneylinerinc.com/

You'll find that prices vary greatly with length, insulation, and other parts. I have a 30' run, and the whole shebang (6" 316Ti liner, insulation kit, rain cap, etc.) was $888. The liner all by itself was $434 at Rockford, but I needed other stuff as well.

Maybe your guy is building it in the price of the whole job?
The Avalon has a 6" outlet, so I'm guessing parts prices SHOULD be in line with my job, but that's a guesstimate.

It has been over a year so I might have forgotten but I think I paid around $300 for the liner and another $100 for the insulation. They did not have a 15' liner kit so they sold me a 20' for the same price.

I am paying about 500 for the liner and cap and about 500 for install of the stove and liner. I guess from what I am reading here I am good. The business is well established and reputable we are dealing with so I am feeling confident about it.
