I have an older Palladian that is not EPA, but it IS UL. The manual says not to use less than a 7" flue, but the Woodstock folks say that they have been waivered to use a 6" pipe. I live in NC and we have a short season and I am leaning on going with the 6", but I wanted to see if anyone had any inputs on this. Thanks,

Paul

I would trust the folks at Woodstock. They know what they are talking about. I believe those with the Palladian and Keystone use 6" liners. You should be fine.

I've always wondered why they went with 7" on this smallish stove, 6" should be fine. How old is the stove? It would be nice to see some pictures and see the differences between old and new. Does this stove have the old round cat?

Pictures would be nice. So would 6".

I've got a 6" flue. I'd be happy to test your Palladian this winter...

:)

If it's anything like the new Palladian, which is a Keystone in dimensions and design, just different outer clothing, the 6 inch will work great. That's what i have on my Keystone.

I never knew there was a pre-EPA Palladian.

Good luck,
Bill

Good deal, I figured that the consensus would be to pony up the extra cash and get the 7†pipe. The stove does have the round cat in it and this is my first cat stove so I am excited. I think that the cat should be ideal for the milder NC days when I don’t need maximum BTUs. I figure I may have to open the windows in the house on mild days just to get the cat up to temp, but then it should be nice. I will take some pictures soon.

It’s a 1983, but it looks like it was only used one season. I’ve got a heat shield on the way from Woodstock and I’m going tomorrow to pick out a piece of Granite to put it on. My wife wants a curved pie shaped hearth and the dimensions should be 60†in diameter to bring the edge to the window where we want it. I’ve already checked and that should give me the 8†and 16†clearances.

Thanks for the feedback. One final question: where can I get something that says that this stove is approved for a 6†flue? The manual online still says minimum 7€.

Give Woodstock a call. They are very helpful.

On thing I recently learned was if you forgo the 7" for the 6" the front clearance is increasesed from 8" to 10". This has not been changed in the manual yet because they are waiting on the lab cert.

Does your stove have the ash pan? Also wonder what your fire box dimensions are WxLxH? I'm thinking they still have the old fire box dimensions listed before they installed the new baffle and ash pan. Probably lost an inch or two when they did the mod.

Well the install went well. Alan from Hart's Hearth did a great job putting in the 6" Dura Vent system and I will post some more pictures later of it later. http://www.hartshearth.com/

We had the Palladian installed Friday and the draft seems good and I didn't have trouble getting the stove up to a nice burn temp. The thermometer on the surface stayed steady around 500-600 for a good while and when it went down I reloaded it. I did two small break in fires since the stove hadn't been used for at least a year. I don't think that it had ever been used too much though. It just seemed to be in really nice shape.

The stove does not have an ash tray. I'll see if I can remember to take some measurements. I'm clearly not used to a glass front as I cracked the glass the first night. Hopefully that's not too hard to replace. I'm going to wait until the spring to fix it in case I do it again. My last stove was a Fisher Mama Bear and I could pack it tight without worry of cracking a glass front.

Thanks for the advice on the front clearance. I made sure that the 10" were there to meet the requirement.

I don't know if I would use the stove with the glass cracked.
Install looks real nice..clean and simple.

Nice looking install. No andirons? Maybe Woodstock can hook you up with a pair? Does the stove have the double pane glass or single? The new models have double pane glass so I wouldn't worry to much if the inside glass cracked but if it's single I would replace it right away, it will only get worse and may contribute to an overfire.

Definitely change that glass! I also agree with Todd and see if Woodstock can fix you up with some andirons. Good luck.
