Been running my new Mount Vernon, freestanding, for about a month now. Have the wall thermostat set with the auto program setting as I would with my furnace... meaning I have it set at a lower (65) level while we are sleeping, and a higher setting (75) for just before we wake in the morning.... etc.

I notice sometimes, when the stove revs up to meet the call for higher heat output that it sounds like a wind tunnel going up through the vent. There is a loud humming noise that sounds like it is coming from the vent pipe. It is almost as if the vent pipe is vibrating from the amount of exhaust that is going up through it. Sometimes, the hearth pad and floor shake. Is this normal ?

The stove was installed by the shop I purchased through and is vented into an existing masonry chimney through the existing 6 in thimble that the wood stove went through.

There was a light tin baffle plate that was bolted on in back of the ash pan that would prevent that whoosing sound you are hearing.

Being a new stove I would assume it has the baffle installed already.

Mine will do that occasionally, if I pull the ashpan and reseat it that seems to take care of the rumbling.

If you remove the ash pan and using a flashlight look for a screw on each side . You should see a tin plate with a oblong hole where the screw is. In other words if you loosened the two screws and lifted up this tin plate would come out.
The early stoves didn't have it but it was a free update so it should have been in your stove. Installing it made a big difference.

If it isn't the baffle, seriously consider that you are overfiring the stove. That's the only time I can make my stoves roar and make unGodly noises.

I know if the ash pan in the MV insert is not pushed all the way in properly you'll get those noises also.

X2 on the ashpan baffle.

Its a new stove but I wonder how long the dealer has had it and if he kept up with the updates on it.

Hello everyone. My name is Jim and im a newbie here. I have 2 Quadrafire Mt. Vernon AE stoves, a free stander in black, and an insert in red Mahogany. All has been trouble free until recentl. Last season the free stander started making a horrible drone sound that while going on would vibrate the house (stove was in basement). I called the dealer to look at the stove since it was still in warranty they informed me because my stove pipe wasn't caulked it was that and Quadrafire would like paying for many nuisance calls. I thoroughly cleaned the stove many times including baffle removal, and exhaust blower, even the stove pipe itself. I even ran the stove while making the noise with the stove pipe off and it still did it. (reason pipe wasn't caulked was my base wasn't finished in time. Still needed the tile put down). I stopped using the stove because of the noise. This season I moved the stove upstairs. New base (it's in a corner now) new stove pipe (different exit) Since trying the stove again the noise is worse. The stove only has about a ton and a half of Hamer's pellets through it. It is so bad it will awake you when it does it. I have opened up the ash pan while running to feel the baffle plate and it doesn't seem to be that ( I thought maybe it was vibrating) This is driving me nuts. I can't figure it out. The sound is so bad I don't want to use the stove. We bought the stoves after our heat pump failed so it's our only our only source of heat. Can someone please help? Thanks, Jim

Do you have an Outside Air Kit installed. It sounds to me like it is the vibration sound you get when it is taking air in without on OAK.

They tend to only do this on start up. The best way I have found to stop this is to reduce the flame height adjustment. This is factor set to 0 but may have been adjusted by the dealer or installer. You can go as low as -5. They are also set to sunflower seed mode from the factory and this needs to be set to the pellet mode you are running at. Hardwood mode may do it less than softwood mode even if you are burning softwood. Also check elevation and make sure this is in normal mode (unless your over 4000').

I do not have the OAK, yet. I did try running the stove with the window open and it didn't change anything. The elevation is set as normal, and the pellet setting is for hardwood. The flame height is too high and the flame adjustment is at -5 now. Thank you for the reply's. Jim
