Feeling the Heat

I am in the planning stage of installing an OAK for my M55 insert. It just occurred to me that my LP tank that is used for cooking and the clothes drier will be about 8 feet away from were the OAK will poke out of the back of the chimney. Would there be any concerns of the OAK being able to suck in LP gas if the tank were to "burp" or if some were to escape the valve when being connected to when filling?

I'm in the processes of check local codes and will post them when I find them. But if anyone else know what they are for NH, please post them.

My stove's manual has a 3' clearance from any propane tank, regulator or natural gas regulator to the outside air intake. Further this distance must be from a vertical line that extends 15' above those beasts. So it can't be above one by 3' it has to be on either side.

Oh, the manual, good idea! I'm going to look at it now.

The distance would be in a mostly horizontal plane.

Yes it basically blocks out a 6' wide by 18' vertical swath centered on the critters.

Nothing in the M55 Technical manual about this. I feel pretty confident that at 8' away, the LP tank should not pose any problems or concerns though.

I agree.

could be like nitrous for the pellet stove. just run a small line into the oak for super fast lighting.

8' away seems plenty. But double check for your own safety. Gotta love the OAK.

Ideas, we don't need no stikin' ideas, we have enough to really cause problems (issues to some people).

Brad, see if you can find a copy of NFPA54, I think that's the right number. It has the gas regulations in it. I believe an above ground tank is supposed to be 10ft from possible sources of ignition. You can check with your local building official or the propane supplier too.

The number is NFPA 58.

You are going to have dueling code issues.

Not my house :)

You know what your doing. Been at this game awhile. I dont care what anyone does. So long as "They" think they have checked everything and they think its safe enough to operate. Code or No Code. People will do what they will to get by. If anyone of ya'll ever came here you would have an "Ah Ha" moment and say "that little son of a %$*##". But having had a Fire in my home. I do not take some things lightly. (Like Candles - Only have one that we light on Special Occasions and Holidays).

My install aint perfect. My Quads OAK looks like I strangled it. I take pics from "Good Angles" so it looks better than it appears.

I dont believe I have ever seen pics of your set-up? I think I remember pics of the Englander not to long ago. But the Vernon???

Even if I got all Code Police on you, its cause I care buddy ;-P

Meant to say hey, Not he. sorry!

Just funning with smoke show some, He is a kidder and I throw a dig at him here and there! He gets me back too! All in fun.

If it came down to something, I know you guys will be right there with me. We help each other and I'd rather hear from you guys before something happens. Code police? Na, I say watching out for a brother is more like it! Well, having some fun while doing it doesn't hurt??? %-P

Short of the propane tank splitting wide open, I don't see how it could be an issue. As an experiment, lift the lid on your propane BBQ grill and turn on all the burners. Then walk 8 feet away and strike a match. Next, try throwing lit matches at the BBQ.

Brad's ignition source is going to be over 10' from the tank anyway you cut it.

It is on the other end of the OAK.

How big is the tank?

^^^ Very Nice ^^^… Love that pipe. Selkirk DT on both installs. Nice.

Yep... Sorry Brad.

No problem guys. Even when a thread takes a detour for a while, the questions always still seem to get answered.

My tank is 100 gallons (not pounds). I bought it from one of the local energy companies when we built the house ~8 years ago. They fill it up maybe twice a year and I don't even remember what the last bill was since it was so long ago. It sits on the NW end of the house, so it never really gets any direct sun light on it.

I'm pretty sure that it shouldn't be an issue, I was thinking that it should be 3' when I was writing the original post, but I just wanted to see what kind of response I would get from some of the "code police" as well.

@waterbug - if you ever saw my gas grill, you would be very afraid to turn the gas on let alone throw a match at it :-S My wife keeps telling me to get a new one but until the bottom falls out of this one, it's going to have to keep cooking the beer can chickens for us.

Ha ha! Love the detour picture. Sorry Brad! We just can't help ourselfs sometimes. Bunch of kids who never grew up! Its always smokes fault! He leads us a stay many times! ;-)
