Last March we had a Lopi Freedom insert installed. We had it and the insulated liner installed by the retailer we purchased it from. From my research they seem like a reputable company.
When they first came out to give us the estimate they took measurements, but apparently it was a tighter fit than expected and they had difficulty making the connection.

Being in southern Missouri, we have only recently started using it, but now I'm noticing soot on the stone right above the top surround panel.

Is this in anyway normal or expected, or do I need to get them out here ASAP?

I might as well ask because some else will...

How is it connected to the chimney? Lined?

You need to remove the surround and see what you have going on in there. You can remove the surround yourself.

Crap. Sorry.

I don't know a lot about inserts, but if it was me I would for sure pull the surround and see what I see... It seems to me it *could* be some outgassing from the paint curing on the body of the insert, and not bieng able to escape anywhere else due to a good block off plate....? do you see/smell smoke when the stove is running, or have you seen/smelled any paint curing burning odors?

Normally, no. No smoke or unusual burning odors. I'll take the surround off tomorrow when the light is better and see is there is anything obvious. May be back with more pics.
Thanks everyone.

I'd take it off now before you burn in it again. You are checking to make sure the line is properly connected to the stove.

Are you certain it wasn't there before, just the surround made it stand out? Are you smelling anything that would make you think there is a leak?

No, It wasn't there before the installation. No unusual or unexpected smells. And I'm not going to burn in it until I take a look tomorrow. I don't know if it is a safely issue, and I'm not going to take a chance. We have other heat.

Well, DH seems to think it WAS there before.
Since it was a mild day, we opened the windows and lit a fire. I scrubbed some small white rocks from the driveway and put them along the top edge figuring if there was soot building up, the fresh white stone should show it.
Nothing.
So I'm thinking it was another of those blonde moments on my part, sorry for the confusion.

But I did take this opportunity to check both CO monitors.

Ahhh the old white rock trick!
