...that I shouldnt be a doin it.
Let the stove go cold this morning. The ash on the glass was gettin to me so I wanted to clean it. Well I just had to stick my grubby fingers into it and clean the farbox AND the ashpan out too. If theres such a thing as a cold far, I got 1 goin now! Me thinks that until spring, that ashpan can just stay full! I seem to remember someone here giving me that advice awhile back but the stubbern ole german in me just wouldnt listen.

I'm with you about the glass. Been burning for about 3 days straight now. The little bit of ash on the glass is starting to annoy me. Makes it look like fog.

You best not start speaking in German here, then people won't be able to understand you in 2 different languages!

Es war ungefähr 2 Wochen, da ich das Glas säuberte. War wirklich nicht zum Schlechten, aber es störte mich.

Not sure I follow, cold far and empty ash pan, I empty my ashes all the time and no cold far.

Nothing wrong with waiting two weeks to clean the glass.

No need to shut her down just to clean off some ash. A simple wipe of a dry cloth. From most likely today forward, my stove is a 24/7 heat making beast, Move coals over dar, cleen sum of dem ashes, move em back over dar, chuck in some fuel and far away.

Clean the ashpan? Or dump it? We clean the glass maybe 2 - 3 times per year and this stove is our only source of heat. We can see in the stove with no problem.

I dont understand it either. This Oslo just seems to like it that way with my less than desirable setup. But then, Jotul recommends a 2" layer of ash in the firebox at all times iffn I'm readin it right. I been cleanin the fire box out every 4 or 5 days but it seems when the ashpan is empty all the goodies fall down into it. Dont know. Probably operator error.

I leave the inch or so in mine, but if I leave too much it seems to disrupt the air flow and the fire in not as active.

I clean the ash pan out twice a week . . . clean the glass weekly and I don't really let things die down to being cold so much as it is less hot . . . which is why I use a damp newspaper to clean the glass.

I start out by stirring the ashes and coals . . . letting the fine ash fall down into the ash pan . . . some of the ash and large coals stay in the firebox. I then dump the ash pan . . . be forewarned . . sometimes some of the ash will drop down and not fall into the ash pan, but will build up in the ash pan box and if you don't check and clean it out it can build up and prevent the ash pan from fitting neatly into the box and can prevent the door from shutting . . . this is an easy fix though as a flat fireplace shovel can quickly scoop up the bit of ash that falls there.

Not a fan of ash pans, but you don't need to let the fire go out to empty one.

I clean the glass every once in a while. Good wood and a hot fire will keep the glass clean for quite a while.

I get the same way.....gotta clean that glass every now and then......I'll shut it down for a little while, never gets too cold in the house, and it recovers pretty quick

Been cleaning the glass every two weeks. I also get a ash buildup on the glass, not so much that I can't watch the fire, but enough to annoy the heck out of me.

As for the ash pan, I clean it out every third day. I open the side door when i do it to prevent all the draft from going in through the ash pan door if I still have some hot coals in the stove. Been working fine up to this point.

HAHA Ich sollte auf diese Weise häufiger Typ, habe ich immer ein wenig verlassen heiße Asche, auch wenn ich das Glas sauber.

Pete

As for the ash pan, mine is the tale of two stoves. Been a lot of discussion on this site about leaving it full, emptying, likes, dislikes and such.
My stove behaves so much better with a pan full of ash under it. No comparison really. No emptying that pan now until March.
Glass? ahhhhh, whenever the stove cools down and I feel wiping it off.

I don't use the ash pan on my stove. I just scoop the ash from one side into my galvanizd bucket, relocate any coals to the clean side, scoop the rest, then push the coals back where I want 'em and reload.

As for the door, I do a quick wipe down with water and ash on a paper towel every couple weeks. I get just a little bit of haze in the lower left and right corners of the window that bug me.
