I stopped at this old farm and asked if I could cut some of those dead trees up. He showed me where I could start on a fence row that dead trees have fell out in field. I got some Locust today will go back tomorrow and get some Cherry. He said if I get done there he can show me other places I can cut.

All this and only 16 miles from the house.

that dead standing locust can some times be dryer than 1/2 dry..that looks like it has been on the ground..its gonna pick up some moisture from the ground...but i cut several dead standing locust down a few days ago.....and i bet they would read 22% or less on the meter..i dont have a meter or i would check it..i borrow my buddies from time to time.
 
They are laying on the ground I don't know how long I would say for years. I have a MM it cost like 10$ ordered it from Amazon I think. That bottom tree is a Cherry that I am going to cut into tomorrow to see if its still good.

I did stick the meter in a few, some read 16% and some others read 26%, I just put the meter in the ends of a fresh cut.
 
The locust will last a long time on the ground, cherry will too though not as long as the locust, nice score

The BL on the ground here, or even standing, sometimes will have a bit of rot starting in the core. If it's been down long enough the core will be gone, leaving a hollow log.
Some of that stuff in the bed of the truck with the cracks and no bark looks like you could toss it in the stove now. Nice score, Cap'n!

Nice score cptoneleg, looks like you could split it then bring it inside for one-two weeks and it would be ready to burn.

Very nice score CP! Locust will last forever even if left on the ground in fact it is used to create pier pilings because it doesn't rot.. I love burning locust as it coals the best and throws out lots of heat..

The black locust is a good score, I've got some that I put in for night burn. But I only put a few splits in at a time gets too hot.
 
The Cherry wasn't bad either anyone within distance PM me looks like unlimineted supply of B/L Cherry and Ash some Oak
