Never burned any Birch but I like Black Cherry. Burns moderately long, coals well and smells great!

Cherry, splits nice, seasons fast, smells good.

White birch lights up in an instant... My pick is the birch. cherry is wonderful smelling, I don't keep my stove door open much and I hate the thousands of small tiny coals that follows cherry

White birch burns longer than Cherry. Cherry is like burning popple.

Hey,

Just out of curiosity which mid-range wood would you rather burn and why -White Birch or Cherry?

Lots of Cherry on our property so that is my vote, if our property had lots of White Birch, that would be my answer. :grrr:

Tough call, I really like both & IME they are close on btus & easy to split. Cherry wins for short drying time & smell though. Birch is nice to look at & comes with free fire-starter.

Both are good woods to burn. If I had to choose though, I'd choose the cherry first.

If I was behind on wood, I'd choose cherry - seems to season faster than any other wood I've stacked. Cheers!

I've never burned white birch that I'm aware, but always consider cherry a fine wood. Drys very well, easy to work, I have some on my property (might drop one tomorrow), and have burned it for years....can't believe folks call it not good.

No cherry around here but lots of White Birch.Better wood then Maple and goes for about $10-$15 cheaper a cord in 8 ft lengths.

I would have to respectfully disagree with that. Both are about equal IMO. I would choose the Cherry first though. I have had trouble with birch rotting, not cherry.

Cherry, dries fast, splits easy, makes decent heat, smells great, & grows like weeds around here. A C

I would think they are pretty comparable . . . I would probably pick the cherry . . . but only because I really like the smell of it when I split it . . . my wife would probably pick white birch since she likes how easy it ignites on hot coals . . . honestly . . . both are good wood in my own opinion.

I'd choose cherry because White Birch rots too easily.

I have both cherry and silver (similar to your white) birch, and they both burn well here.

When cutting cherry, I save the sawdust for a freind who has a smoker, it does good meats.

I tend to burn more birch as there is far more birch around here, just have to c/s/s it quickly once it's down ;-)

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I just burned cherry yesterday and while it did smell and burn nice (albeit fast), but I did find the heat output kind of lacking. I'll have to try my birch and see how that compares.

What are you burning this wood in it helps if you put your type of stove in your signature, Im burning Cherry right now its putting out good heat.

Actually as you can see in my signature I do not know what I am burning my wood with. I didn't think the Cherry was that bad but I reached the maximum room temperature of 74F compared to around 77F with my other hardwoods.

Thanks

Nice looking insert and Christmas decorations but I don't know anything about inserts. So I can't help with the brand.
