Any one have good luck with used stoves?

I'm on #2. First was a pelpro, which worked good for awhile but eventually it's giving me headaches. Don't know if its the control board or the auger motor. As some day's it worked fine or it'll just stop feeding as soon as I walk out the door to head to work! Found another that popped up locally a Quadra fire Santa Fe and was able to grab it cheap. But it's been neglected and I swear for a two year old stove it's never been properly cleaned and it needs new glass and door gaskets and some paint. Tore it down today to clean it up and also got it installed today. The door for the burn pot was completely stuck, pulled the pot out (snapped one bolt) and had to cut the nut off to get the door off. Hopefully now that it's all cleaned up I can put it back together and have a reliable stove for a quarter of the price of new.

Any thing to look out for on the Santa Fe stoves?

My first stove was used and I got 8 years out of it. All we could afford and I'd have no issues doing it again. But make sure its been well cared for, Or at least make sure you consider the needed items to bring it back to tiptop shape.

Quads are pretty basic. Most items don't need replacing for years. A good cleaning and some proper lubing it should be fine. Did you fire it up before you dragged it home?

Others, Don't forget the AM/FM stoves on ebay. Like new(reconditioned) for a lot less than new!

I got mine of craigslist. Its my 3rd stove. First used one. So far so good. Thought I needed a proof of fire switch, but after watching it run on low for an hour I think it needs the auger run time adjusted. Mine takes a diagnostic tool to do that and it is a $400.00 item. So I will run it on 2 to 5.

Bought 2 stoves off Craiglist. Both work great (Fahrenheit and Englander 25-PDV). They were both plugged and filthy when I bought them. But thats expected from a lot of "used" stoves.

Santa Fe is an easy unit to work on. Quads are one of the most simplistic units on the market. Very little user input, but lots of Output.

Any used stove that you've seen run before buying can be a great deal as long as you disassemble it completely after you get it home and clean every last bit of ash possible, clean & lube motors/blowers (if possible) and in general just get it back to as close to original condition as possible.

If all the motors are good, the electronics are sound, and all the gaskets are new or tested, it should run like new.

Hello

I had a used Enviro EF-2i that I rebuilt and is working fine for a friend that I sold it to. They are built like a tank.

I just picked up the top of the line Pelpro Bay View which I saw running that I heard good reports on from people that owned it and fixed it up.

What model Pelpro did you have? How old was it? You have me curious. My Bay View is 5 years old but used less than 3 years.

I did go thru it and clean and lube the blowers and put in new door gasket and firebrick plus some nice paint to bring up to showroom condition!

It is a 4 year old pelpro FPP2BD. At first it worked fine but was never impressed with the heat output of it. Seemed no matter how much I cranked it up and got it burning perfectly it just didn't kick out the heat. Unlike my parents harman that has no problem baking you out of the house. Try'd a few different pellets in it never made much of a difference. Was going to fix but when I seen quad pop up I went that rout instead. Luckily the exhaust is pretty close to one another so was able to use the chimney that I already had in place.

Interesting, Do you still have the Pelpro?

There is a big price difference between your stove and the Bay View but not sure why.
This looks like it?

Here are 2 reviews on your Pelpro.

Anyway one thing I noticed is both these units have a 265 CFM convection room blower. That is huge considering my 45k BTU Avalon Astoria has a 165 CFM blower and heats my whole house fine! So the more air the blower moves the cooler the air will be.

Did it have the AcuTron I, II or III control board?

Bought my Harman used
best 1000 dollars I've spent, saved that much the first year
one ton of pellets a month to heat 4600 sq ft to 70 degrees

We bought our two whitfields used.

I judge used stoves based on condition. If the fire box is in good shape and the exterior is not all beat up, then such things like electrical parts can be repaired or replaced.

Paid $200 each for the Whitfields and the little one came with a hearth pad too.

Just depends on, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty a few times and tearing things apart and replacing a few bits and pieces.

All told, the out of pocket cost for our two Whits with pipe and the new raised hearth I built in the Family room, cost me less than $700 for Both stoves and the odds and ends needed to install them.

I used new Pipe and fittings for both stoves. The pipe and fittings for the small Whit had been used by a shop for a showroom demo wall setup and had been painted.

I got this stuff cheap because it had been painted and knocked about for a year or so. Never had been used on a stove with a fire but the shop considered it used.

There are a lot of good Pellet stoves that are sold cheap on such places as craigs list.

I bought 3 other stoves, winter before last. Cleaned them up well and then resold them.

One came with over a ton of Pellets, which I kept and burned. (Booty)

I would not hesitate to buy another used Pellet stove.
