So Cent ALASKA
Found a Husqvarna, 359, 20" bar
4 or 5 years old, never run, never had oil or gas in the tanks. Asking $400
Bought it for a lot clearing job, but then decided to bid the job out & never ran the saw.
Offered 300, will get back to me,
Not the one with a green gas cap.
Good deal?

Not in need, have a 359 " green cap" 6 months old.
but after a few trips way out, a good back up saw would be handy, & sometimes Son in law helps.
+
New muffler help mine have more power? Is that the difference, new ones restrict at the muffler, hotter cleaner fuel burn?

I'm confused, but a never run 359 for $300 is a good deal regardless of the color of gas cap

Considering its a $550 saw that has a great reputation, $400 for basically new never run is a good deal, even thopugh the model has been retired. If you can get it for under $400, grab it. Great saw.

No brainer for shor.

Hell for that money if it was closer I'd grab it even though I'm not looking for another saw right now.

I run a 16" bar on mine. Had it 3 or 4 years, no issues at all, would buy another without question. Has the green cap. I read about mod'ing it, but haven't gone further.

In short, excellent saw, excellent price.

Good deal for $400 at $300 that would be tough to beat. You shouldn't have the cat muffler on a non green cap one. Watch the crank seals on your 359 green cap, you will take out the piston if they leak & lean it out. Randy

If you look inside a green cap muffler you will wonder how it can run, there is a plate with tiny holes in it & a catalyist somewhere(maybe the plate itself). The black cap muffler is regular open design. Ebay has non cat mufflers. If your saw doesn't respond instantly with a handfull of throttle I would get at the low speed limiter too, Randy

May put on the non cat muffler after warrantee. Saw Bailey's had them.
Have heard it said it's a tuned down 357? Nice saw, light weight, & compared to the old Husq 61, New one has all the parts.
I found I like the new saw with a working chain break, throttle & choke + it idles & starts easy (no tape & epoxy holding it together) :)
Got a skip chain, not sure I like it, but dealer said it wold work better with it. Now I need to compare it with a normal chisel chain.
Don't seem to have the power of the old 61, Have cut about 8 cords with it.
Does it need adjusted/tuned after break in?

Thats always a good sign Dave, no tape & epoxy, lol. These are powerfull saws, I don't know what the old 61 was rated at, If I remember right the 359 is 3.9 hp. I'm going to put a 24" bar on mine, for reach mostly. I would get rid of the cat muffler, make sure the seals are good, & if need be have the dealer pull the limiter caps & set them in so you have an adjustment range that works where you are, Randy

LOL: was quite a shock when I got the new saw, everything worked. Still learning how easy it starts. If I pull the choke & push it back in, when warm, one pull, hard to get used to. :) Old 1982 one has an attitude.

It was adjusted by the dealer when I got it, will I need to have them adjust it when I install the new muffler? That critical?
Think I'll order the "non-cat muffler" from Bailey's.
Thanks.

What 61 did you have Dave? There was a 61 & a 61 Rancher with quite a bit of hp difference between the two, Randy

The one I offered 300 for , guy never called back, (older model 359)
1982 61 Rancher. Still runs but some wrinkles, cracks & missing parts. (NO Chain brake)
Old saw/new saw pics.

Your 359 should be stronger than the 61 Rancher, 3.9 VS 3.6 hp. If you had the 61 that is 4.1 hp. Did you say the 359 is under warrantee? I'd take it back to the dealer. It could have a bad coil etc. I have a 346XP that runs great for 10 minutes & dies & can't be started. If you let it cool it starts right up till hot again. I think they have too much electronics in what used to be simple reliable coils. Randy

I'm not having any problem with the new 359, runs fine.
I thought it would "really out cut" the old 61
But when I bought it, guy put on a skip chain.
Not sure comparing the 2 is fair.
I sharpened the old saw's chain & had a new skip chain on the new saw. IMO the old saw cut faster.
Now I've done some research on skip chains & think I'd be better off with a regular chisel. May get a Stihl chain since I read here they are the best. :gulp:

Stihl makes a good hard chain. I believe it's the RSR full chisel that I use if possible. I have never used a skip chain & don't intend to fix a problem I don't have lol. I thought you were saying the 359 lacked power, Randy

61's are great firewood saws. I just got lucky and found a near new one for $150 (non rancher, black top). Didn't need it, but couldn't pass it up at that price.

61 are nice saws, mine still runs but loaning it out to family, comes back with parts missing. I fell a tree on it when new. cracked the case, replaced & fixed bent stuff.
After 28 years I was expecting the new generation saw to just point it at a tree & come back & it's cut in rounds LOL
That's where I am with getting another 359, If I get it for a good price. it's nice to have 2 like saws. When out in the field, a back up may make the trip finishable.

Also after reading many 359 reviews, changing the muffler on mine, the "cat muffler" model, to a "non cat", the saw runs cooler & sometimes better, which extends the life.
Don't know if that's a reasonable conclusion since I'm not a small 2 cycle engine guru.
But there are allot of folks that say "change to the non-cat".

I usually over research stuff like this & end up being more confused than when I started.
Do I have a good saw? Do I need to change the muffler, do I need to get rid of the skip chain etc**

I love my 359. I exactoed to stupid limters on the the carb so I can actually adjust it correctly and eliminated the CAT muffler. I've had it for 5+ years and cut loads of wood for the stove with it.

It has been absolutely reliable, easy to start and has never left me down. My only minor complaint is the weight. It is as heavy as the 357 but not quite as powerful so a bit of a trade off. At the time the 357 was too much $$ for me.

I run mine with an 18" bar and Oregon LGX chain. It is my go to saw. I cut almost all hardwood here and it just keeps going!

I'd snag one for $ 300 in a heart beat!
JD

Thanks JD
New muffler & carb tune seems to be the consensus.
No call back on the saw, guess he sold it.
May try RSC chain, saw shop close with it in bulk.

Yes, I accidentally slipped & cut off the stop area of the limiter barrels with an Xacto also. With a new crank seal mine will run as new, Randy
