The Temp knob on my harman is very finicky. I try to set it to about 72 in the house, but there is only about 1/16th of and inch difference with the knob between 65 and 78 actual degrees in the house, and both look like 70 on the dial.

Can I use a thermastat to control the temperature? Or just to turn the unit "on or off" at a given temp?

See my sig... I wouldn't run a Harman any other way. The temp knobs are worthless, IMO. Get a wall thermo and you'll never look back.

Can I use any thermostat?

Generally, no.

Must be millivolt compatable, gold contacts, low voltage and low current.

Harman recommends Honeywell RTH230B or RTH6300B.

You'll have to run a wire which makes the wireless solutions more attractive depending on your situation.

Sounds like the potentiometer is dirty - try this: Turn the control from maximum to minumum about 30 to 40 times. If it is just dirty it will clean the dirt off. If it does not help the control needs to be replaced. I replaced the control on my Advance about 3 years ago and has been fine since. It was doing the same thing you described.

I have a new (this year) P-61A and have not had a problem at all....set at 72deg. house stays at 71.5.

mine has been good thru all those pellets in my sig, just acting up in last few days, gonna try the cleaning trick tonight and add thermostat when I have a chance.

I relocated my temp probe on the P61A to the distribution fan intake at the bottom right side of the stove and now I find the Room Temp mode works great.
