Hi , I installed a Tarm boiler with 1100 gallons of storage and I was wondering if I also installed some solar panels would part of my system qualify for the 30% tax credit of solar. I understand the boiler would not qualify ,but what about the storage tanks and accesories?

I would think that if you did it in the same year you could justify that. I have water storage, electronics, and inline pumps with my solar hw system and the discount figured in the total cost of the system. I’m not sure if you would have to prove that the system would be capable of operating exclusively on solar, but in the summer you probably will run it like that anyway. DSIRE has a-lot of the details for stuff like that.

Did you use evacuated tubes? I’m happy with my system’s performance so far on year 2.

I have not purchased anything solar yet. I am just starting to look into it. I have extra ports on the top and bottom of my storage tanks, but dont have a understanding of all thats entailed? Any comments would help.

I don't think you're question is very clear. It sounds like you want to add some solar hot water heaters to your hot water storage tank. And you're asking if the cost of the solar hot water is eligible for the 30% federal tax credit, correct? Personally, I'm not sure of the answer. If you ask more clear you might get a better answer. If no one here can answer I'd start with a manufacturer salesman. They will know the answer.

I know there is a 30% federal tax credit for solar electric panels. I am not sure if there is even a 30% federal tax credit for solar hot water.

Happy New Year to all

Yes Solar Thermal as well as Solar Photovoltaic both qualify for 30% tax credit.
This lasts through 2016.

On a personal note, We installed March 1 2011 a solar hot water system.

Today Bright Sunny Temp in the 30s outside .
Rooftop temps of the polyethylene gylcol are 75 and rising will top out at 120-130 !

Saving about 300 gallons of oil a year ($1000/year)
Payback in 5-6 years depending on cost of oil. Then Free hot water for
System should run for 20 years more, total saving of $20,000 vs business as usual.

It really is NO BRAINER for those of us who heat with oil
