I'm retracting my comments on another thread that gave Eden wood pellets a fairly positive review. This evening I decided to take the chill out of the air and crank up the stove. The hopper was empty and I dropped a full bag of Eden pellets in the hopper. I took a handful of pellets and placed them in the burn pot (I do this so that I don't have to feed the auger with pellets in test mode) and the dial for auto start and within 5 minutes she was roaring. I noticed as the fire was burning a bright orange glow rather bright and abnormal to what wood color burn looks like. I looked a little closer and on the back panels was a substance bubbling with what looks like plastic or rubber. I immediately opened the door and scraped the back panel and found it was a sticky black substance. Also the glass became very dirty which had never occurred with my stove on start-up. I will admit after a week or so the glass shows some signs of soot on the glass. But my stove was just cleaned. I proceeded to pull a handful of pellets out of the hopper and evaluate the pellets and see what it might be. As in the picture you'll see black particles in the pellets. They were in about 1/3 of the pellets I pulled out with my hand. I decided to put them in a bowl and microwave them and see what happens. Take a look at the picture and you can see the dark spots in the pellets are shiny...Is it plastic? Is it rubber? I have no clue. I then poured water in the bowl and the pellets disintegrated and the last picture shows the result. Hard plastic/rubber rocks left in the bowl. Is this a bad batch? Is it just this bag I have no idea. What I do know is I'll never burn these pellets again. That's why they are priced reasonably low for this area. Live and Learn.

I have yet to see that in the ones I have from back in June. I will be looking a bit closer and ask my customers that have purchased them if they have noticed anything. So far most have liked them saying they were hot and clean. Thanks for the heads up I have another truck load coming in November I will give them a look over also.

How many bags of the Eden do you have? I am wondering if it was a small batch made or many bags with odd black items in them. I just got done reading about the Green Supreme with colored plastic in them that is in many bags.

We have been selling the Edens for a couple of months. So far only one customer was not happy. The bags I have burned were a little dusty and had some fines in the bottom. I did see a couple of little pebbles in the hopper when i poured in a full bag.

I only had three bags and this was my second bag I poured in. The first bag was mixed with Barefoots. I have one bag left and I'll open to see if it has the same consistency.

Yes, Please inspect some more. If you do see some? Take a sample and send it too them.

IMHO this isn't exceptable. If you do find more and others also find interesting objects in them. Might be time for a boycott! If it says on the label "made from wood" that should be all that it contains. Anything else should not be tolerated.

There are too many good mills(using only wood fiber) getting there profits reduced, By other mills peddling trash. How many of you really want to burn trash or construction debri in you expensive equipment?

That's the same crap I found in my Barefoot pellets in the Spring. I was not happy. I had melted spots of rubber/plastic on the stove glass. I swore off Barefoot's from then on.

Yes, last year I posted pictures of Barefoots with additives. I didn't do the microwave test with those because I didn't think the issue was as severe as the Eden pellets I tried. I continue to burn Barefoots but in a different LOT #. I was lucky enough to only of had a few bad bags of Barefoots that were the issue. I have to FULLY agree with J-Takeman on this one. We as pellet burners have choices and should make the right choice for our particular stove when burning pellets. It was a big investment years back. I enjoy the stove very much and I refuse to save a few dollars here and there on poor quality pellets on an appliance that heats my home. We invest a lot of time and effort in maintaining these stoves and not to mention the weekly maintenance that goes along with it. Poor pellets can be a nightmare. Don't we all remember ACP Appeling County Pellets!

All you need to do is soak them in water. Plastic/rubber will float to the top. Wood fiber will sink after it absorbs the water, shouldn't take but a short while. I usually do it over a 24 hours span.

Neat to look at the layers. Guess I'll have to post a picture the next time.

I just got 22 tons of Edens in.... I havent run across any black plastic in what I have gone through so far....sold a few tons off and haven't heard anything... So far I am happy with the them - they seem to burn hot and consistent... I have noticed some dust that I should filter, but other than that I have been happy...

Looks like a bad batch that you have there....maybe call them to report it...

How do you guys know they are adding something at the mill to the pellets? All manufacturing processes are suseptable to general contamination. Could be part a conveyor belt or something in the plant, not saying its completly alright but its not the same as just adding rubber or something as an ingredient.

The last 22 tons I revived seemed to be much better I did not find any plastic or other materials in the pellets and they are very hot in my Mt Vernon. The first shipment did have plastic in the pellets for some reason. Like it was mentioned things can get into the system on accident without anyone knowing. Think of the open silos they have for explosion protection I'm sure there have been birds that got in and ended up becoming pellets and other small wood loving critters.

Probably not that big of a deal unless it's screwing up your stove.

Odd some of things you guys find in your pellets. It would seem it be in the best interest of the pellet mill owner to keep the feedstock as clean as possible so as not to damage his shredding and pressing equipment.

Apparently that's not the case.

So if pellet manufacturers are grinding construction refuge, what about nails and screws? I have seen a lot of construction refuge...its a heaping pile of wood, roofing material, insulation, sheetrock, old receptacles... No way are they going and pulling all the nails out.... They are they running this stuff through their mills?? I guess it would be somewhat easy to get some of the steel out, but everything else??

I am going to grab a bag of the newer Eden and do a water test on it and see if we have any goodies hidden in the pellets. I have not seen anything from visual yet but turning them into sawdust will tell the story better. I am going to try and take video and post it but that normally does not go well with the old camera.
