Beautiful stove. Takes 18" wood. Very clean burning with steady even heat. Easy to light.
Start damper is crude. Small capacity because of secondary air baffle. Small ash pan.
This stove replaced our Jotul 602, which is a great little stove. At first the new stove just wouldn't put out much heat. Many calls to Jotul and the dealer didn't resolve the issue. It ended up as my mistake. I didn't have the stove top gasket exactly centered on the top stove rim. Found this by observing the burn and moving the stove thermometer around. It was burning 150 deg. cooler on the left side! I pulled the top and found soot build up on the front edge that indicated the problem. Cool air was suppressing the secondary burn on the left side. Now that the top is correctly centered and the gasket is seated properly, the stove is burning great. Had to install a butterfly damper in the stack due to high draft. The stove burns well now and is very controlable. We get about 4 hrs. between refilling on douglas fir and madrona.
This is a great stove for a small home or one that is tight and well insulated. But, given the firebox size, I might have gone for the Castine if I had taken the time to go to the dealer with a box of wood to checkout firebox size. Still, I love Jotul quality and style and this stove is heating us nicely.
