I like large window which allows the light of the fire into the room. The stove uses a recirculating system to burn the gases before going up the flue. This system keeps the glass from getting dirty. Heats well once it gets rolling. Burns about six hours on a load. I generally stoke again at 4:00am. If I let the fire go out, it\'s easy to re-start as long as there\'s some coals in the ash bed.
There\'s no ash drawer or hopper. There\'s no grate for the ashes to fall through. You have to shovel the ashes off the bottom of the unit, which is also where the fire sits. Takes a little getting used to.
We live in far northern Wisconsin and this is our primary heat source. We got the Patriot in 1998 & never have had a problem. We burn well seasoned hard maple. It is so efficient that once it\'s up to operating temps, there\'s hardly any smoke coming out the chimney and cleaning the stack and flue have been a breeze.
