I live in northeast Texas in a home of approx. 1500 square feet with good insulation. This unit does a good job on heating the house. It is centrally located in the living space of the house which has a split betroom floorplan. The bedrooms do tend to be about five degrees cooler than the area where the stove is. I can get an overnight burn if I turn the the damper/air inlet down and put a big log on before going to bed. Only a few coals will be left in the morning, and the temperature is usually a little chilly by then. I love the stove, but if I did it again I would probably buy the next size up just so I could put more wood or larger logs in when I want to. The stove has a blower, and I am not sure if it would provide enough heat without it. I have used only wood heat this winter and saved a lot of money over last year's electric bill. It will still take another year or two for the stove to pay for itself, but I am happy with it. I don't know that using strictly wood heat would be everybody's thing. I like it, my wife loves it, and the kids think we are crazy. You can guess who wins that vote.
