Incident: On 10/13/02 Owner was attempting to light pilot on stove after being dormant for summer. Owner repetitively was holding in control valve to pilot position while rapidly sparking Piezo with good spark. Approximately on sixth attempt, an strong explosion occurred expelling 80% of glass forward into the room mostly striking a wall 4 foot away and rebounding. Most of the glass was less than 1inch in size. Approx 10% of the glass was retained in the outer frame, and the other 10% bounced back into the firebox from striking the decorative front iron design. A grayish pungent smoke clouded the room. No one was injured, although the smoke was irritating to the throat. Bits of what appears gasket material was expelled from the top of the stove, and gasket material from the glass holder was expelled. There is some concern over Asbestos exposure. The #6 bolt which retains the glass frame head was also sheared off leaving a clean fresh stud. The burner now has a crack 1.5 inches to the right of the Piezo about 1 inch long adjacent to the front face gas opening. Because of the cold air rushing in with no glass, after cleanup, the direct vent uptake had to be removed to stuff with opening with rags. Some fatigue of the inner appliance adapter is noted and needs replaced with gasket
