After you add the 950sq feet and allow for the increase in cost of energy for the next 5 yrs, I don't think it will take too long to break even......
Alder and Poplar definitely have less BTU's per cord than say Fir,Hemlock,Maple or Birch... But it is not useless if dry.. you can still heat...
