Journey to the bottom of the sea... 12 days and here is what they discovered...

THIS IS SAND. KNOW WHAT IT'S GONNA BE A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW? IT'S GONNA BE SAND!

You just have to get a garden going and mow your lawn.
  3. St_Earl Minister of Fire

    doing both. :)

been digging the pit. made a nice new huge sandbank out of the remains.
6 cubic yards of screened loam right out of the local woods being delivered in a day or two.
    bags of manure/hummus await.
today we go in search of some seeds for ground cover for the sand bank.
putting three russian sages in at the top of said bank.

but it's freaking 65 degrees in my living room!
(might actually have to put socks on)

After you get the garden ready then you can kick back with a brew (keeping with the thread topic) and plan what you are going to plant. But frankly 6 yards of screened loam is going to need a lot of organic material added to it. The first load I dumped in my raised bed was 7 yards of screened loam over 3 yards of composted manure followed by 4 more yards of composted manure. We have been adding compost to that bed every year. I also dug a rhubarb pit and that took a couple of yards of loam, composted manure mix. The rhubarb patch also got moved after awhile to make room for some chickens.

You also need to build a few compost bins (pellet pallets are what I use). There are all kinds of garden waste, leaves, grass clipping, etc ... one can fill them with.

Remember do the yard work and enjoy a brew, stay off the 'puter on good days those are for yard work and cook outs.

ha! i had to remove root masses of rhubarb back in oregon that were as big as me.
those cuttings are all over the city now.
one guy even drove down from washington state to get some.

that garden will be hard to match i my lifetime.
but we have the compost going already and a stock of composted manure/hummus awaiting the loam.
the soil here is basically pure sand and rocks.
i did get into a small patch of something resembling actual dirt. even found a worm.

Get some chickens, use the deep litter system, then when you shovel out the chicken coop put that in the compost bin, toss in grass clippings and cover with a layer of dirt.

I go so far as to harvest the burdock leaves from the neighbors lot and compost that.

Perhaps I should try that in grain bag. Wonder how well it would ferment (that on topic thing again).

If you have a leaf blower for your pellet vent cleaning you can attach a bag and use that to shred up all of your fall and spring leaves (maybe offer to help with the neighbors leaves). In the fall you can dig a trench (or more than one) in your garden and toss the ground up leaves into it. I did that without grinding them up first last fall, I will grind them this year.
