Got home from work to a cold stove today around 4:30 pm. Started it up with some very old and dry maple.....6 good size pieces. About 45 minutes later my son said..." Dad...its at 800F!!!....." Took the Rutland Thermometer off the stove..let it cool to 250F and then put it back on and it now reads 550F.. Thank God.....So what the heck happened? Is the Rutland Thermometer broke??

Probably is trash. All the Rutlands we've tried were not too good. An IR gun will give better results or a Condar thermometer. We got ours from Woodstock and they are on their 6th winter and doing fine.

+1, we bought a Rutland at tractor supply, 3 weeks later broke. Condar is superb and an ir is handy.

Which Condar should be used for an insert where you have no flu?
