I guess I have a bit different perspective on this. It has to do with what I'd call the "sweet spot" of a stove's operation.
For every stove I've owned, there is a rate of burn and a load size/piece size that will burn the load AND the coals from the previous load at a pretty consistent rate. That, to me, is the sweet spot for a given stove, installation, fuel combo.
Your mission, should you decide to accept it... is to find the sweet spot.
It may result in more frequent refueling intervals than what you are wanting.

yup but i still get way too many coals in the firebox

i'll have to make some smaller splits and give that a shot tonight
