This is one I tackled from Hurricane Ike in 2008. I actually wanted the root ball to return to where it had been so as not to leave a big hole. I also didn't want to be anywhere near that ball when it started moving.

The axe in the second picture is a 28" Fiskars. After it stood up, I cut the remainder and left a short stump. It made a big thud when it returned.
