Not sure if any of you are subscribed to Angie's List, but I've used it extensively to find high quality contractors at good prices. All of the tree companies I've used have been found this way and all did quality work at a fraction of the cost of the ones I had give quotes from a straight google search. I decided to look up firewood and sure enough, you can get reviews on firewood dealers. Some of the reviews are worthless, others are pretty good (ie, mention that the wood was or was not seasoned, etc). Anyway, for those buying their wood, thought I might toss this out there for you. I think my subscription was 16 dollars a year with a groupon special. Very helpful site if you value client reviews.

I'm not a subscriber, but my recent wood buying experiences have left me wanting to post reviews someplace.

The first guy ripped me off, delivered far less wood than paid for, a quarter of it junk species and all of it very wet. He continues to advertise his fantastic product, and I wish there was some way I could warn the uninitiated.

But then I bought from another guy, and he's a gem. He's got a degree in forestry, used to appraise woodlots for landowners and only turned to tree service / firewood work when the current recession crushed the construction industry. He knows what moisture content means, and the wood he's delivered to me has been reasonably dry (!!), very fairly priced and the full quantity I ordered. I'm now scrounging my own wood so I may not need to use this guy again, but I'd love to send more business his way. (If anyone even remotely close to Pittsburgh sees this and needs a supplier, drop me a note).

Someone setup a site specifically for Long Island firewood reviews. Seems like a great idea, unfortunately it doesn't seem to have much traffic. Maybe this will help. Let's go Long Island contingent, share your stories, good and bad...

I absolutely love Angie's list and use it frequently. It has saved us much hassle with contractor and those who use it are aware that they get business based on ratings from the website.

    Pete,

Love it as well. I figure the return on investment to be thousands of dollars for this year alone. I should buy the friend who recommended it to me a beer or twelve. Never even thought about firewood being on there, but sure enough it is. Some quality reviews on a few area companies that I had contemplated calling when I first moved into my house, but opted to go with a more expensive "2 yr seasoned" company charging a lot more per cord. Turns out that wood is still not burnable in an EPA stove so I'll likely be splitting some less than ideal Ash a bit smaller and mixing in with my good wood to get keep the stove going through March. Looking forward to next year with a good wood supply of properly seasoned wood.
