Well our ATV Club uses cedar trees for bridge stringers . . . but technically the trees are still wood. 
I'm thinking they meant to type in "firewood" instead of "wood" and were thinking "other purposes" could be cutting it up for lumber, making furniture, crafts out of it, etc.
