Was told this was wild cherry. But I have cut a bunch of black cherry and thought it was the same thing. It was dead for 2 years laying in a field so no leaves.

So any ideas what it really is?

Really all the cherry I have ever cut was really red on the inside and would have been really rotted on the sap wood laying in a field for 2 years.

Looks like cherry... How did it split? Easy/hard?

It's pretty dry already didnt take the Metter out to it only split a few pieces that were about 10 inch rounds and split them in half with one or two swings.

Freshly felled cherry can be really light colored. I wouldn't suspect black cherry would have lasted two years in the field, but I guess it did! Hooray.

Totally black cherry

This is what all the cherry I have cut before looks like and as I said if it's been on the ground for 2 years the sap wood is normally rotted. I'm still in shock everyone says cherry.

I've cut black cherry that has looked like that too, along with the above pics

Sure looks like cherry. Though i would echo the same response that i am shocked it lasted without rotting.
