Asphalt inside a tree.

Found a huge mass today while splitting.
Chipped up the wedge a bit too.

Actually, after looking closer and smashing it with a hammer it's a lump off concrete.
 
Did someone fill a rotting hole with concrete mix?

Sure looks that's way. But I didn't see a hole or anything that would indicate that.
Unless it grew over.
 
Good thing I didn't hit it with the saw.
 
Yep... seen it a few times. I believe this was a pretty common "fix" for a rotting yard tree a generation or two back.

Have also seen trees in the woods pick up a rock, although I've never hit one above buttress root height.
