I found some free wood on the side of the road on the way home from work. Any clue what this is?

Some kind of oak. Does it smell great? If so it's oak.

I just split some Poplar for my brother-in-law today that looked like that, white cutside and that reddish-brown inside the bark. If it's Poplar it should be pretty light in weight.

Aspen, everyday of the week.

Poplar or Cottonwood, a good hardwood like oak won't be "fuzzy" on the end grain when it's cut. Oak will also have easily visible medullary rays.
