The only things I can imagine is either:

1. This site uses a bad ISP who somehow does not block the bad guys....
or
2. There are many members who have been given false permissions (administration privs) and therefore can go into the software and change the templates and redirect.

It could be as simple of a thing as the person having access to one text file (.htaccess) on the server. Inside that file, you can do anything with anything (rewrite the url, etc.).
 
Just back in the house again.

Whatever it was earlier, it seems to be back to normal now. Sure seemed weird then though - hope things stay the course.
