Question:

i have a Ashley wood stove mod #c-60-0 ser#a23 20411
the ? is what does the little screw valve between the stove pipe and the door about 3/4 way down from top what does that half to do with the burning of the stove.

Answer:

I'm not familiar with the exact model, but some ashleys and other stoves had a secondary air intake such as what you describe. This allows some air into the fire at the top of the fire to assure a more complete burn and also makes certain that some idle air is present when the stove thermostat shuts down.
