Black birch bark looks more like cherry bark.
If that ain't yellow eye'll travel the 9 hours to zaps and join the polar bear club in his creek.

LOL, Thought it might have been the bear peeee!

I just ran into about 20-30, 6-10" rounds at the bottom of my reserve wood cache and I'm burning it right now. Stuff throws some awesome heat.
If ya cut some Zap leave some in good sized rounds. It dries fairly quick even in big rounds.

Why do I want to say River Birch?

river is a lighter tanish color. yellow and black are hard to tell apart. whites to easy.

doubtingLEE, will do. That birch is on the bank which I'll leave and look for some in another area. The area across the brook is ours but the last time I was back in that area was when we posted. On that side we have a right of way through this ladies driveway which is in the deed, so I don't bother with cutting in that area yet.

Looks like (soon to be) Dead Birch,if anyone close by is cutting today...

That is surely a Yellow Birch. Black Birch isn't as peely and the bark is blacker. River Birch is much peelier (peely = having barks that peels away from the trunk) and the color is different. Classic Yellow Birch habitat, although Black Birch probably grows somehwere close by, and River Birch also likes to be near water. I think LEE called this one right.

You can stay home and be warm, Lee. You've hit the nail on the head once again.

Zap, I'll take a pic of some black birch and post it when I got a chance. I'll be handling plenty once this -20º hits town.

Yes - 100% yellow birch - no other birch looks like that (at least from this area). Cheers!

+1 on yeller birch

Zap, I've always been envious of your vast hardwood resources, but if you tell me there's wild brookies in that creek, I'm gonna break down and cry.

Beautiful shot. ;-)
