We were giving our fireplace at the cabin a face lift and my wife wanted to paint the bricks and did not. So I talked her into letting me clean it up and we go from there. She now likes the bricks! All the dirt was from the previous owner before the insert was put in.

I think its nice. A little elbow grease goes a long way. Is that hearth cement?

Looks great. We have similar colored stone on our fireplace in the living room. We have often contemplated staining it to look more gray but haven't had the nerve to try

I know, once stained you've pretty much lost the bricks for good. My daughter stained her's gray and it looks very nice.
