Figures, it takes a govt. sale to ruin a good thing. The affordable market for biofuel is already present, thank you very much. Biofuel 50/50 mix is cheaper than pure diesel locally. Our ferry and bus system use it. Yet the military variety is selling to the govt. for $35/gallon!

This was covered locally too. They mention camelina as a seed oil source which is an interesting choice that OR and MT are studying.

Actually, I am a bit concerned about this trend. The military uses a huge amount of fuel. To expect this to come from plants is concerning. The land use could be up to 10% of our arable land. That is also going to take water and fertilizers to grow + fuel consuming equipment to sow, harvest and transport. A recent RAND report concluded that the military will do better to focus on dramatically increasing day to day efficiencies at military bases and with weapons systems.

My concern is that as we move land use to biofuel, land that could be used for feeding people is being diverted to feed engines.

On the face of it, biofuels look attractive, but it does seem to be a double edged sword........

Happens right now. The oily weed is competing with wheat for acreage. The wheat is winning right now because of the price of wheat. Ya get a choice. Loaf of bread and burn Saudi oil or no bread and burn oily weeds.

TANSTAAFL. What a friend named his bar down in Texas. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.
