I have a Vermont Castings fireplace insert in my otherwise conventional
brick fireplace. I'd like to build bookcases set back on either side of the
fireplace. Is it OK to have the wooden bookcase right up against the brick
sides of the fireplace/chimney? The sides of the chimney are never more than
slightly warm, so I'm thinking this is OK, but I've read that some places
have clearance requirements. I live in Vermont if that make s a difference
as far as codes. I know people build wooden mantels right up against the
brick on the front, so why not on the sides?

If the bookcases are recessed or flush with the brick face, then it shouldn't be an issue. If they project past the brick face, then the side clearances as established by VC must be honored. How much clearance depends on the stove make and model and the width of the brick fireplace face. For additional piece of mind you could insert a layer of cement board between the brick and the bookcase side.

In this case it is wise to not go by code.....but to exceed what code recommends as minimum. Why take any chances at all. Like BeGreen stated, some cement board will work wonders.
