hey y'all,

Quick question. Previous owner of my home had an HVAC guy come and add a return next to the wood stove that ties directly into the supply of the air handler in my basement. The supply feeds the upstairs central heating.

There is no direct ducting connection to the stove. The return is about 5ft away from the stove to draw in warm air.

Any special considerations or anything I can do to make this more efficient.

HVAC guy should have known that mechanical code requires the return grille to be at least 10 ft away from the stove. The ductwork needs all joints sealed and the entire system to be insulated (supplies and return) for best efficiency.

The concern is if you have weak draft or experience negative pressure in your home, as your fire turns to coals overnight and things cool off and then your hvac kicks in. It could draw CO out of your stove and disperse it around your home. Make sure you've got good CO detectors throughout your house.
