We are in the process of installing a woodstove (Jøtul F 3 CB) in front of an existing fireplace. The fireplace had been messed with years ago and didn't draw well. We installed a 6" SS/Ti liner. I'm about to sandblast the stone. THEN (no stove installed yet!) I need to extend the hearth. Right now, I am looking at bluestone, 2" thick with a 3/4" plywood and thinset base. I've read all the clearance information for the stove, but i'm wondering if this stone (alone) is thick enough, heat-wise. It will install in two pieces with type "s" mortar.
