Most store bought surge protectors only protect a spike above 500 volts and from hot to neutral line and have a low joule rating. you should buy a high joule rating and a surge protector that can protect all three lines hot to neutral hot to ground neutral to ground. and a clamp voltage under 500 volts. most of the store bought devices ar really just power strips and only trip when the amperage is to high. the clamp voltage and the joule ratting is important if you have a spike in your line that jumps the voltage up to 400 volts say if you turn on an appliance it can burn out your main board and no more heat. plus now you need a new board. it should also have an indicator light on them incase they do receive a spike they will still supply power to your device but will not protect them. The http://www.tripplite.com/en/products/model.cfm?txtModelID=3980 is a perfect model for a cheap price. good luck hope that answers your question with out getting really technical
