This happened in a CT classic home a couple days ago. Chimney fire spread through the attic (unlined chimney to the wall adjacent to the garage. Shame, it's a lovely old home prominently defining the character of the town. My wife's mom lived in the big part of the house in the 70's. The wing addition was a separate apartment.

Exact reason I went with insulated double wall and a block off plate.
The original masonry is in perfect shape, but I just didn't trust a direct connect.
If I ever have a chimney fire, it will have to get through the liner & the masonry.
