Some stoves are designed for both wood and coal. My old DW Sequioa had special plates that could be installed in the firebox so that one could burn coal. Coal burns much hotter and requires a "crib" to hold the coals from contacting the glass and other materials. This stove was very heavy cast iron.

Unless your stove/insert has clear instructions and the necessary coal accessories, I would strongly advise you not to burn coal in it.
